The SUV segment continues to be the hottest seller in the automotive market. It's like the mid-size sedan segment of the past - great for all buyers, and with models to meet the wants and needs of pretty much everyone. From bare-bones two-wheel-drive models focused on providing just a little more space for passengers and cargo, to luxurious and power-packed luxury SUVs, finding one that is the right balance for you might take a lot of looking, but trust us, it's out there.

One of the SUVs that strikes a near-perfect balance is the 2022 Acura RDX. It's a compact SUV - but it's not too small, being more than enough for a small family and their needs. It's a luxury SUV, but it's not too over the top with an ornate interior or overpowered engine. It straddles a very fine line, and it does it well, as affordable luxury. The 2022 Acura RDX has received some minor updates from last year - let's take a look at what makes this SUV the whole package!

Performance Features

A single power plant is offered in the 2022 Acura RDX, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is unchanged from the 2021 model. With 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, it offers power on demand. This isn't sub-five-second zero to sixty time, but it is plenty for daily driving and highway merging and overtaking. It's fairly economical as well - standard front-wheel drive versions get 22 MPG city and 28 MPG highway, while the SH-AWD system that is available on the lower trims and standard on the top two trim levels gets 21 MPG city and 27 MPG highway.

With multiple re-tuned driving modes including Comfort and Sport modes, you can change the tuning of the RDX to fit your expected driving. The 10-speed automatic transmission is smooth-shifting. The braking is re-tuned as well, providing a more consistent feel from the previous year, which in turn brings the entire handling of the RDX up a notch. One area the RDX lacks is towing - maximum capacity across the model line-up is 1,500 pounds, so you won't be using it for hauling large toys around to the lake or the forests.

Style and Technology

The biggest focus of the 2022 model refresh for the Acura RDX was the interior and exterior design, as well as interior creature comforts and tech. Outside, the grille has been textured while the front air intake has been widened. Rectangular exhaust tips have been added in the rear, while tires have been made larger across the line-up - now the standard wheels are 19-inch 10-spoke wheels, and the upgrades are 20-inchers. Three new color options have been added to the paint choices.

Inside, the 2022 Acura RDX offers plenty of space for people and cargo. Rear seats get 38 inches of legroom and 38 inches of headroom, fairly large for a compact SUV. There's 29.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row - plenty for groceries or luggage on vacation - while folding the seats down provides up to 79.8 cubic feet maximum, or 58.9 cubic feet normally. That's more than enough for moving a kid off to college, or bringing home all the needs for a weekend of landscaping, or a brand new big-screen TV. You can do all this in style, thanks to aluminum trim inside, as well as available open-pore wood and Milano leather appointments.

Creature comforts include dual-zone automatic climate control across the model spectrum, along with the convenience of push button start. A panoramic moonroof is also standard. In the tech realm, the 10.2-inch True Touchpad infotainment display integrates and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with Siri Eyes free. Bluetooth is standard, along with voice recognition, and the nine-speaker standard stereo system can be upgraded to a 12- or 16-speaker premium system. AcuraLink connects your vehicle and your smartphone, making it easier to keep track of vehicle health, monitor your vehicle when you're away from it, and even provide walking directions to your final destination once you exit the vehicle, or to return to where your vehicle is parked.

With the AcuraWatch safety suite, you get a massive array of tried-and-true active safety systems to help keep the 2022 RDX out of trouble. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high-beam assist are all standard with the system. A multi-view rear camera with dynamic guidelines is standard, with an available surround-view 360-degree camera system. Front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and rain-sensing windshield wipers can also be added to the mix.

Trim Levels

Choose from five different trim levels on the 2022 Acura RDX, each with unique offerings!

The base RDX trim features plenty, and is a great value at its price point. It comes with all the standard equipment mentioned above - True Touchpad Interface, 10.2-inch infotainment display, satellite and HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, two USB ports, a nine-speaker stereo system, voice recognition, and AcuraLink. Synthetic leather upholstery with heated, 12-way power-adjustable front sport seats are standard as is a leather-wrapped steering wheel.  A panoramic moonroof and dual-zone automatic climate control add creature comforts, while push button start and a proximity key make life easier for drivers. A hands-free liftgate, larger wheels, and front and rear parking sensors are independent add-on features at this trim level.

The RDX Technology trim level makes those front and rear parking sensors standard. Safety tech is added - blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert - while the infotainment center is upgraded with a 12-speaker premium audio system and navigation. Passengers get premium leather upholstery and a GPS-linked climate control system that optimizes cabin temperature relative to the outside conditions.

At the A-Spec level, the RDX gets performance tweaks as well as interior and exterior upgrades. A sport appearance package and LED fog lights are added outside, along with 20-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the upholstery is upgraded to premium Milano leather with suede inserts, the front seats get ventilation, and the stereo system is upgraded to a 16-speaker ELS unit. An ebony interior headliner and Y-pattern dark brushed aluminum trim add sophistication to the interior.

With a sporty ride, the Advance trim adds an Adaptive Damper System that senses conditions and adjusts suspension stiffness to create a perfect ride. Side mirrors get puddle lights and are power folding, for convenience. Milano premium leather upholstery with contrast stitching and piping throughout is standard and pairs well with the open-pore wood trim. Front seats are upgraded to power 16-way adjustability, and include thigh extension and side bolsters. Outboard rear seats are now heated as well, along with the leather-wrapped steering wheel. This trim is available in SH-AWD only and, despite the improved sporty ride, it does not get the exterior sport appearance package the A-Spec has. The surround-view camera is standard on this trim, along with the rain sensing wipers. Finally - maybe most importantly - the hands-free liftgate is standard on this trim.

On top the menu of trims is the A-Spec Advance, combining the previous two trims into one ultimate package. You get the sporty driving upgrades of the Advance, while also getting the sport appearance exterior package from the A-Spec. This trim gets a unique heated flat-bottom leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, and features the same upholstery and interior décor as the A-Spec, but with all the added amenities and performance from the Advance trim.

There's a reason why the Acura has consistently been rated highly in the luxury compact SUV class - generally surpassing higher-priced competitors. It's a reliable vehicle built on tested equipment that offers plenty of amenities without going too crazy. It offers space and capability, with added comfort. The 2022 Acura RDX is poised to continue to sit at the top of the heap, and continue to be the smart choice for drivers seeking affordable, intelligent luxury!
